(VIS) is one of Iceland’s leading providers of non-life insurance services, offering a broad range of insurance products for individuals, families, companies, institutions and municipalities. In 2005, VIS arranged a 3 month Good Driving Behaviour competition for 17 new and young drivers using SAGAsystem™ as the monitoring platform. With one exception, the contest participants drove very responsibly and without any accidents. The prizes for the three winners of the Good Driving Behaviour competition were awarded by the Minister of Transport, Mr. Sturla Bödvarsson. The winners achieved having almost no deviations registered based on the smooth driving formula (undesired or dangerous accelerations, breakings and excessive speed in turns based on G-forces) or exceeding speed limits. A comment from Mrs. Ragnheidur Davidsdottir responsible for prevention and safety at VIS sums up the project as follows. “I allow myself to state that SAGAsystem™ is the best kept secret for road safety in Iceland”. This 18 month project was initiated in 2006 by Gjensidige Forsikring (GF) in collaboration with The Norwegian Public Road Administration (“Statens Vegvesen”) and ND where the SAGAsystem™ DAP platform was applied together with a PDA solution mounted in each trial vehicle which informs the driver with an electronic voice if speed limits are being exceeded. The project objective is to assess new methods to help young drivers to adapt to good driving behaviour early in their driving career. Each participant has access to his or her own SAGAsystem driving index and detailed driving behaviour on the internet. The first 50 volunteers were selected as project participants. Participating members are offered free data-logger installation and use combined with an insurance incentive from GN for the 18 month pilot study period. Not a single road accident was registered.
